Freelance Web Developer

Hi, I'm John, a freelance web developer based in Hampshire, but I typically work in London.

I specialise in producing high-quality interfaces for HTML5 applications and responsive websites. As well as developing for the web, I also design for it. I've worked on major web projects for broadcasters, communcation companies and luxury fashion brands, but I also enjoy helping digital agencies, small businesses and self-employed individuals.

Give Me Sport

Sports New Media hired me to produce a highly responsive frontend for their site, which recieves millions of visits a month. Page loading time was their biggest concern, so every effort was made to keep the codebase as lightweight as possible and for this reason the CSS was authored using Stylus.

CSS Tube Map

CSS Tube Map

This personal project, in which I replicated the historic London Underground map using only HTML5 & CSS3 (no images or icon-fonts), went viral within days of launch. The aim was to demonstrate the unsung potential of CSS3 by taking it into a more playful direction. Spread largely by Twitter the project became the focus of technology sites and blogs all over the world.

Another personal CSS project, to commemorate 50 years of the BBC science fiction series Doctor Who, in which I used CSS3 and HTML5 to illustrate the TARDIS, the programme's imfamous time-machine-come-spaceship iconically disguised as a London Police Box. The project proved very popular with the British digital community and was featured in Net magazine.

The Man In The Corner

A single-page site designed to promote an independently-released e-book by Hayden Gribble. He needed something simple that would interest potential readers and provide them with a synopisis and a few customer reviews before guiding them to the point of purchase. I also designed the cover for the book itself.

Hawes & Curtis

Luxury shirtmakers Hawes & Curtis hired me last year to help develop and launch their new HTML5 e-commerce site. I put in place a fresh, new front-end strategy and worked closely with their design and backend teams to help deliver the best possible experience. The website was launched in Autumn 2013 and saw a signficant boost in sales.

As I mentioned earlier, I have also worked on projects for the following brands. I've developed high-quality HTML5 applications for the likes of Burberry and Sky, produced interactive Facebook tabs for Pizza Express, prototyped a bold new vision for one of TUI's busiest travel sites and helped launch new products for BT and Vodafone.

What I can do...

Becoming a freelancer was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Its given me the freedom to focus predominently on the area of the web I love the most - aesthetics.

My role is to perfectly realise the designer's vision in the browser, whether thats on a desktop, tablet or smartphone. I strongly recommending using pre-processors such as SASS and adhering to some form of reliable version control, like Git.
